Almighty and everlasting God, Who hast enabled us to honor in one solemn feast the merits of all Thy Saints: we beseech Thee, that, with so many praying for us, Thou wouldst pour forth on us the abundance of Thy mercy for which we long.

Celebrating the Saints :: Our 2020 Costumes

St. Helena, St. Teresa of Avila, St. Maximilian Kolbe, St. Anges + Lamb, St. Rose of Lima, St, Michael the Archangel

I've been meaning to share this pictures from All Hallows' Eve here on the blog and finally had a few moments to finish up the post. I took them as we were leaving the house to head over to our parish's All Hallows' Eve/All Saints Party. It was such a fun evening for all! More pictures coming soon...

.: St. Anges + Lamb :.

Twinkle Toes (age 17) and Joy (age 1) as St. Agnes + Lamb 🐑

White Dress from Amazon, Blue Scarf, White Lilies and Rose Crown from the costume box
Lamb Costume from Pottery Barn, Leggings from Gap Factory, Shearling Mocs from Freshly Picked

“The Early Church rightly venerated young Agnes for her valor, her virginity and her boldness. Agnus is the Latin word meaning “lamb, sheep.” Her sacrifice as a young “lamb” and the holiness of the Lamb of God for whom she died resonated. She is frequently pictured and sculpted with a little lamb in her arms or by her feet.”

.: St. Teresa of Avila :.

Chiquita (age 15) as St. Teresa of Avila 🕊❤️🏹📖

Carmelite Habit from Our Coats of Many Colors. I ordered it (and a Dominican Habit for our 3 year old) at the end of August just before they lost their warehouse and all inventory due to a fire! I've been ordering costumes from them for over ten years, praying for them and hope they rebuild their business...

She came up with the rest with things from the costume box or around the house.

St. Teresa of Avila’s heart was physically pierced by an arrow of God’s love! After exhuming her body, they discovered a puncture wound in her heart. Read the description from her autobiography:

“Our Lord was pleased that I should have at times a vision of this kind: I saw an angel close by me, on my left side, in bodily form. This I am not accustomed to see, unless very rarely. Though I have visions of angels frequently, yet I see them only by an intellectual vision, such as I have spoken of before. It was our Lord’s will that in this vision I should see the angel in this wise. He was not large, but small of stature, and most beautiful—his face burning, as if he were one of the highest angels, who seem to be all of fire: they must be those whom we call cherubim. Their names they never tell me; but I see very well that there is in heaven so great a difference between one angel and another, and between these and the others, that I cannot explain it.

I saw in his hand a long spear of gold, and at the iron’s point there seemed to be a little fire. He appeared to me to be thrusting it at times into my heart and to pierce my very entrails; when he drew it out, he seemed to draw them out also, and to leave me all on fire with a great love of God. The pain was so great, that it made me moan; and yet so surpassing was the sweetness of this excessive pain, that I could not wish to be rid of it. The soul is satisfied now with nothing less than God. The pain is not bodily, but spiritual; though the body has its share in it, even a large one. It is a caressing of love so sweet which now takes place between the soul and God, that I pray God of His goodness to make him experience it who may think that I am lying.”

Snuggles (age 13) as St. Michael Above the 38th Parallel

St. Michael the Archangel ⚔️ Defend us in battle; be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, cast into Hell, Satan and all the other evil spirits, who wander throughout the world, seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Have you read Michael’s Letter or heard the story of St. Michael Above the 38th Parallel
It's so great and what inspired his costume this year.

.: St. Helena :.

Rose (10) as St. Helena

Costume: Crimson Princess Costume in Large, with a wood cross made by her Dad

“She worshiped not the wood, but the King, him who hung on the wood. She burned with an earnest desire of touching the guarantee of immortality.”  - St. Ambrose about St. Helena discovering the true cross

.: St. Maximilian Kolbe :.

Bud (age 8) as St. Maximilian Kolbe

He was so excited to reuse his eldest brother’s costume from 2013... Amazingly the blue tape is still sticking to the shirt! He also asked me to help him print out the quote shown on the icon/Confirmation gift in the older boys' bedroom. It all came together!

“Modern times are dominated by Satan and will be more so in the future. The conflict with hell cannot be engaged by men, even the most clever. The Immaculata alone has from God the promise of victory over Satan. However, assumed into Heaven, the Mother of God now requires our cooperation. She seeks souls who will consecrate themselves entirely to her, who will become in her hands effective instruments for the defeat of Satan and the spreading of God's kingdom upon earth.” - St. Maximilian Kolbe

.: St. Rose of Lima :.

Grace (age 3) as St. Rose of Lima

Apart from the cross, there is no other ladder by which we may get to heaven.” - St. Rose of Lima 💗

"You cannot be half a saint; you must be a whole saint or no saint at all."
- St. Therese of Lisieux

The Little Flower :: DIY St. Therese Infant Costume

If you are looking for a simple last minute DIY costume idea for All Hallows' Eve or All Saints' Day, here is what I ended up making for our baby girl last year

It was so quick and easy to make using a white one piece outfit, a brown baby hat, a crocheted rose, some light green/dark green felt, and some white thread.  I simply pinned the rose onto the hat (covering up the pink flower underneath, a silk flower would work too), added some white accents to the leaves (giving the impression that I actually took the time to sew them on), and hot glued the stem and leaves to the outfit.

It turned out so darling and was the perfect addition to her older siblings St. Louis and Zelie Martin costumes

Celebrating the Saints :: Our 2019 Costumes

St. Lucia, St. Cecilia, St. Pio, St. Zelie, The Little Flower, St. Louis and St. Philomena - All Saints in Heaven, Pray for us!

"On the feasts of the saints consider their virtues, and beseech God to deign to adorn you with them." - St. Teresa of Jesus

.: St. Lucia :.

Twinkle Toes (age 16) as St. Lucia

Twinkle Toes didn't decide on a costume until the day before so that really limited her options. We don't have much in the costume boxes in teen/adult sizes! She ended up going with St. Lucia!
Can you believe that Santa Lucia Day is NEXT MONTH already?!?

.: St. Philomena :.

Chiquita (age 14) as St. Philomena

This is a repeat costume from three years ago, but she really wanted to be St. Philomena again here at our new parish. Plus she is planning to choose St. Philomena as her Confirmation Saint next spring.

She had outgrown the old blue costume, but this beautiful dress worked perfectly, plus she didn't need to wear it backwards like last time! We ordered it in a women's size small. It took us awhile to find our Rose Garland for her head, but it all came together and she looked so pretty!

.: Sts. Louis & Zelie Martin and their Little Flower :.

Snuggles (age 12) as St. Louis Martin and Rose (age 9) as St. Zelie
Lily (2 months) as The Little Flower

Rose and Bud were both trying to get their older brother to dress up with them - Rose wanted him to be St. Louis and Bud wanted him to be St. Pio as his bilocating double! We were able to round up the stuff for a St. Louis costume, so that won. The only thing I purchased for his costume was this watch.

St. Zelie's costume was super easy with this medium sized costume from Amazon. She also rounded up a doily and some knitting needles for her lace work to carry around. Her idea!

.: St. Pio of Pietrelcina :.

Bud (age 7) as St. Pio

The fake beard we ordered for this costume was so fun and kept him toasty warm for the outdoor games up here in Northern Idaho, plus it looked so cute! After I took a picture of him standing, he asked me to take one more and knelt down to pray. Love this little guy!

.: St. Cecilia :.

Grace (age 2) as St. Cecilia

St. Cecilia is aways popular with our girls. Twinkle Toes dressed up as her back in 2007 and Rose dress up as her in 2011. We reused Rose's costume and picked up a new wig.
I love the long blond wigs on tiny little girls... So cute!

We're missing the older boys, who are both back at Christendom, but we sure loved having them home for fall break last week. Won't be long and they'll be back for Christmas and winter break!

Celebrating the Saints :: Our 2017 Costumes

Our Lady of Guadalupe, St. Augustine, St. Francisco Marto, Our Lady of Fatima, St. Jacinta Marto, Sister Lucia Santos, St. Maximilian Kolbe and St. Francis Xavier - All Saints in Heaven, Pray for us!

.: St. Maximilian Kolbe & St. Augustine :.

Like last year, the boys decided to wear "saintly" t-shirts representing their confirmation saints! Captain (17) is wearing his St. Maximilian t-shirt that he received at the beginning of this school year and Ranger (15) is wearing his brand new St. Augustine t-shirt that arrived in the most recent box from Catholic T-Shirt Club last week! Perfect timing!!

.: Our Lady of Fatima :.
Sister Lucia and Saints Jacinta & Francisco

Twinkle Toes (14) as Our Lady of Fatima, Bud (age 5) as St. Francisco, Chiquita (age 12) as Sister Lucia, and Rose (age 7) as St. Jacinta

Three of the girls convinced their youngest brother to dress up as St. Francisco to go along with their costumes. They were inspired by the 100th Anniversary of the Apparitions and the canonizations of Francisco and Jacinta earlier this year!

.: St. Francis Xavier :.

Snuggles (age 10) as St. Francis Xavier

.: Our Lady of Guadalupe :.

Grace (4 months) as Our Lady of Guadalupe

This favorite costume - made by her Grandma for one of her older sisters over 10 years ago - was a little big on her, but I'm pretty sure it will be too small next year so we made it work!
