State-by-State Baking :: Virginia's George Washington Cherry Turnovers

It's been a few weeks since the girls made this recipe, back before their Daddy left for training and they came down with that awful virus and then pneumonia.  At that point our State-to-State Baking came to a stop for the time being.   Hopefully we will be able to get back to spending some extra time in the kitchen after Easter. 

The girls really enjoyed studying Virginia and were wishing they could visit.   Especially since that is where half of their cousins live!  The girls read O is for Old Dominion: A Virginia Alphabet and then completed their Notebook Pages.

The girls decided to make George Washington's Cherry Turnovers, since apparently they were a favorite of his.  These were incredibly easy to make (at least in 2012!), and delicious, or so I was told.

George Washington's Cherry Turnovers


1 Package of Frozen Puff Pastry (2 sheets)
1 Can of Cherry Pie Filling
1 Egg


Unfold the thawed puff pastry sheets and cut into 4 squares each.

Fill each square with about 2 Tbsp of the cherry pie filling.

Fold over the pastry dough and seal with fingers.

Beat egg and add a tsp of water to make egg wash, then brush top of pastry with the egg wash.

Bake at 375 until golden brown and allow pastries to cool.  Enjoy!

Following Virginia... only 40 more states to go!  :/

  2. Those look so delicious! I have never seen pastry puff sheets before. I'm going to look for them on the next trip to the market.


    1. You can find them in the freezer section of most grocery stores.

  3. How do you coordinate all these yummy treats with your Lenten fasting? (I don't mean that in a critical way, I am just curious.)

    1. Though we do try and avoid desserts during Lent, it isn't something our family gave up completely this year, and we have had some desserts (and birthday cakes) on occasion.

      We've tried to make more main/side dishes for the State Study during Lent (i.e. Baked Beans, Hamburgers, Crab Cakes, Fruit Butterflies) but we did make a couple desserts (the Apple Tea Cake - which was tiny, enough for a very small piece each - and these turnovers, also just one each).

      When we made the basketball cookie/treats we made those on a Sunday, since my children did all give up candy for Lent and they were made with Reese's PB cups and basketball chocolates. We also celebrate with food on St. Patrick's Day and St. Joseph's Day.

      Normally i would have preferred to save this particular recipe for a Sunday as well, but since my husband was leaving that weekend, and cherries are one of his favorite foods, the girls really wanted to make them before he left. Since he was going to be gone for his birthday this year I decided it would be okay.

      I'm glad that Lent is almost over and I won't have to worry too much about what we can/can't make for the State Study! :)

  4. It's so sweet to see your girls enjoying their study so much! We just love these books at our house, too...LOL, my daughter (who loves reading your blog, over my shoulder!) is really hoping we can do this too, next year. Although, I think we'd have to start at the beginning the summer, LOL, just to make sure we had enough time! You are doing an amazing job!!
