A Week of Celebrating

This is quite the week for celebrating feasts in the Church, isn’t it?! We started with Michaelmas yesterday, today is the feast of St. Jerome, and we also will be celebrating St. Therese, the Holy Guardian Angels, and St. Francis as well! (Click the links to see our plans.) Today we celebrate the feast of St. Jerome. St. Jerome is one of the great “Fathers of the Church.” He is best known for his translation of the Bible into Latin, called the Vulgate (meaning “common language of the people”). It is historically the most important vernacular edition of the Holy Scriptures. He was a brilliant man, and St. Augustine has been quoted to say, “What Jerome is ignorant of, no man has ever known.Last night, as I was cleaning the kitchen, I noticed our cupcake stand was still more than half full (Dinner was so yummy and filling, that my children were hardly able to eat one cupcake each.). I remembered the lion cupcakes we made for the feast of St. Mark. It wouldn’t be hard to turn those leftover cupcakes into lions! (Jenn was thinking along the same lines!) So, after lunch today, the kids and I made some caramel corn — this recipe from Mary is sooooo easy and delicious!– and then the kids decorated the cupcakes to enjoy as they colored and listened to a couple stories about St. Jerome.

I was so excited to find a inexpensive copy of Margaret Hodges, St. Jerome and the Lion a few months back. It is out of print, but so worth keeping your eyes open for a used copy. We also read the story of St. Jerome found in another great book, Legends of Saints and Beasts. Other than that, we just stuck with a couple core subjects today (Math, Language Arts and Religion), and have spent the rest of the time enjoying having hubby/daddy back home! 🙂

Happy Feast of St. Jerome!

Prayer of Mothers

Father in heaven, grant me the grace to appreciate the dignity which you have conferred on me. Let me realize that not even the Angels have been blessed with such a privilege—to share in your creative miracle and bring new Saints to heaven. Make me a good mother to all my children after the example of Mary, the Mother of your Son. Through the intercession of Jesus and Mary I ask your continued blessings on my family. Let us all be dedicated to your service on earth and attain the eternal happiness of your kingdom in heaven. Amen.

A Little About Me

Hi! I'm Jessica, a Roman Catholic wife and home educating mother to our nine children. I was home educated myself, along with my eleven younger siblings. I have a special devotion to St. Therese, through whom I have been given much help and many blessings--the beautiful "Shower of Roses" that she has sent my way! Here I will record a few of the blessings I treasure. Please remember that what you see here is just a little glimpse at our lives, so please say a prayer for us, as we continue to strive for holiness.
