The Story of the Bible {Review & Giveaway}

The Story of the Bible is an exciting new program for students of all ages. In the recent past, Catholics waited until the latter years of high school or post high school to begin bible studies, if these were begun at all. Regrettably, this has left a significant void in the spiritual lives of young Catholics in knowing their Holy Religion. Why start young to study the bible? Quoting St. Jerome, Doctor of the Church, we are reminded that “Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.” An FSSP priest has instructed the youth of his parish to “know your bible, and you'll know your faith.”

Whether a parish priest, a lay teacher in a school, or a homeschooling parent, one of the most challenging tasks for a Catholic instructor is to tackle the study of Sacred Scripture. The comforting principle with this program is the shared vision that the Editors impart with teachers when they sincerely state that “our prayer is that The Story of the Bible and the accompanying test books will tell the story of Scripture in such a way that young readers will be drawn closer to Our Lord, who is Himself the eternal Word of God.”

What is referred to as the “Schoolhouse Model”, this program engages children of all ages into its content. The Text Book and accompanying Test Book engages students to delightfully discover, revere, and cherish their own precious tradition of the Bible. The print is read with ease and the stories are at an engaging pace. What perhaps were previously obscure locations in history to the reader, suddenly become alive and tangible with the maps and descriptions of their relevance in biblical history. From Mount Tabor to Mount Carmel, to the mapped route of the Israelites exodus through Egypt the reader will appreciate the context of biblical events and the interwoven threads through salvation history. The Activity Book and accompanying Teacher’s Manual charters the biblical foundation for your students. The program utilizes the Revised Standard Version of the Bible – Second Catholic Edition (Ignatius Edition) for its scripture quotations. We can immediately recognize the name Benziger Brothers, Inc. whose original work on bible history has been incorporated into the book, The Story of the Bible. An Audio Drama delivers a quality reading of the text for the whole family to activate a listening experience of the Bible story. Finally, the Video Lecture Series reviews each chapter for establishing a firm command of the text.

Samples of the supplementary materials corresponding to the textbook and test book can be downloaded for free at www.TANHomeschool.com. The program encapsulates a package that takes the study of Sacred Scripture, a seemingly daunting lesson to teach, and delivers a sound product that is easy to explore. Tackling Sacred Scripture never looked easier.

2015 Camp Saint Joseph

It was such a blessing for our two oldest boys to be able to attend Camp Saint Joseph again this year!  The boys enjoyed spending the week with some of the awesome FSSP seminarians and priests (including their uncle, Captain's Godfather!), the friends they made last year (and some new friends as well!), hiking, swimming, rifle shooting, games, catechism lessons, the "Ask Father" box, great food and more. Unlike last year, my husband didn't attend the camp with the boys but he was still able to take some pictures on the first and last day.

{this moment}

Yesterday morning, after daily Mass, I had the privilege of getting to meet and hold a little miracle.

Patrick Gabriel Snodgrass, who many of you have been praying for since last Easter when his dear mama found out that he has trisomy 13, was born alive on August 8th at 5:51 AM weighing 7lb. 5oz and 18.5 inches long. He was baptized immediately after birth. You can see pictures of him with his family on his birthday over at Facebook.

Due to his health issues, he is not expected to be staying with his family on this side of heaven for very long. They don't even know if he will make it through the weekend.

Please pray for a miracle, but also for peace and acceptance of God's holy will for this amazing family who has already been through so much with the loss of their daughter Julianna last summer.

May God reward you for your prayers!

New Additions to Our August Book Basket

Happy Feasts of St. Philomena and St. Clare!  I have a few new additions to our August Book Basket to share with you all this morning in honor of these two inspiring saints.

+ + +

This sweet book, sent to me by author Christine Henderson, made a perfect gift for our 10 year old daughter whose team name at summer camp this year was St. Philomena! It will also make a nice addition to our collection.

A Sister Marie Story: Saint Philomena, HELP!

Sister Marie works in a poor area trying to help the residents improve their lives. One day she meets, Maggie, a little girl, who has just moved into a run down house with her family. Things are not going well for them, and the father does not know what to do. Sister Marie shares with this family the story of Saint Philomena. Will this wonderful saint be able to help?

In addition to the listing at Amazon, this book is also available directly from the author at Jacob's Toy Box and Books.

Up early this morning, wearing her summer camp t-shirt and reading her brand new book about St. Philomena!

Regina Martryum Productions, one of my current sponsors here at Shower of Roses, has re-released some downloadable audio stories that are perfect for the month of August and the feasts of St. Philomena and St. Clare of Assisi. Be sure to click over to their website for a special sale they are running today and tomorrow only!

Daughter of Light - St. Philomena (Audio)

The biographical novel of St. Philomena, virgin and martyr. Her parents accept the Christian Faith and are rewarded by Our Lord with this marvelous child who is virtuous and wise beyond her years; moreover, she's brave and heroic. Having vowed herself to Christ, she declines the marriage proposal of the despot Diocletian, the wicked emperor of Rome. He punishes her with imprisonment and torture but miracle after miracle occur and she defies death. When her final hour does arrive, she valiantly suffers death for Our Lord and the Catholic Faith.

A Light Unto the World - St. Clare (Audio)

St. Clare was born in Assisi in the 12th century, the eldest daughter of a wealthy Roman family. When she was 18 years old she heard St. Francis preach in Assisi and since that time she wished to follow the Franciscan rule. Her family wanted her to marry, but she wished to trade her life of luxury for the hardships of poverty in the service of God. She ran away from home and pledged obedience to St. Francis as her superior. She became one his first followers and founded the Order of Poor Ladies. At just 23 years of age she was the sole foundress of a rapidly growing religious order of nuns, soon known as the Poor Clares.

With exciting sound effects and a full cast of characters, this theatrical Catholic production is the uplifting story of a young girl's faith in God and her heroic courage in the face of His enemies!

My Daybook :: August 10, 2015

Outside my window...
Smoke!  It's currently fire season out here in the Pacific Northwest...

On July 30th, shortly after getting home from our road trip, we were visiting some friends for the afternoon when my husband sent me these two photos of smoke. He was overseeing a tree marking crew just a couple miles from where the fire was started and could smell it before he was able to see the smoke plume. That evening the fire quickly grew from 600 acres to 6,000 acres. By morning it had buried all of us down here in the valley under a thick layer of smoke.

My husband wasn't available for fires yet (he needed to catch up at the office after being on vacation for most of July, and meet with some contractors) but on Saturday night, after working overtime all day, he changed his status online and received a call from dispatch first thing Sunday morning. He picked up his Thermal Imager Infared device and left early this morning for his assignment - looking for hotspots. This particular fire is now over 22,500 acres and 40% contained.

I am thinking...
I miss him already. Please pray for his safety, and for the safety of all wildland firefighters!

I am thankful...
that I was able to figure out how to jumpstart the mini-van using the motorhome. We made it to the library just before they closed on the final day of the summer reading program. That was close!
Learning all the time
The girls pulled back out their State-by-State Notebooks to add pages for Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana following our recent road trip! I have a feeling they'll be adding a few things to my grocery list as well.

Celebrating the liturgical year...
On Sunday we attended the 2015 St. Anthony Festa at the fairgrounds. As always the boys served Mass and we enjoyed the delicious Portuguese meal afterwards. (I was daring and decided to try some of the meat from the Sopas, even though I didn't know how it had been prepared and with what ingredients and seasonings. It looked harmless enough. Bad idea. I'm still recovering.)

We are also celebrating the feast of St. Clare this week! (It's celebrated on August 11th on the new calendar and August 12th on the traditional calendar.) I was so very excited to see that Regina Martyrum Productions has just released a newly remastered full length story of St. Clare of Assisi! They are also having a 48 hour sale Tuesday and Wednesday for the feasts of St. Philomena and St. Clare of Assisi. During the 2 days if you buy her story you get 40% off the rest of your order with code CLARE40. Now is a great time to build your collection!

You can find additional book suggestions for the feast of St. Clare and other August feasts here.

From the kitchen...
I finally used my beautiful Cherry Red Dutch Oven made by Staub (it was my Christmas/Birthday/Mother's Day gift) for the first time this past week to brown and then bake some short ribs.

This is my first dutch oven and I'm still learning how to use it... So far I love it!

I am working on...
  • Little Flowers Notebook Pages - the actual pages are complete, now I need to start working on all the new sample pages...
  • Catholic Digest Quiet Moments/Celebrate submission for November 2015
  • Another blog post for TAN Homeschool
  • A review and giveaway for here at Shower of Roses
  • When did my blogging hobby turn into an actual job?!?  ;)

I am creating...
Curriculum Plans and Checklists for our 2015-2016 School Year. You can find our past curriculum plans here. So much to do and so little time!

I am going...
to pick up some Hershey Kisses and Rolos to make this year's Patron of Students Back-to-School Treats for my children.

I am hoping...
to get back to posting about our trip! I still have pictures from Grand Teton, Yellowstone, the Catholic Summer Camps, and Captain's birthday to share.  Not to mention other past birthdays, more about my diet, and everything else I'd love to find the time to share on the blog.

I am praying...
the rosary each evening for a special family intention and Daddy's safety.

Sunday night: Meditating on the Coronation with the help of our Sacred Art Series Rosary Flip Book

I am reading…
reviews on High School religion/theology courses and trying to make a decision on what to use for our High Schooler(s) this upcoming school year. Our Quest for Happiness, the Fr. Laux Books (starting with Chief Truths of the Faith), the Didache Series... So many great programs to choose from, I can't decide!

Pondering these words…
from St. Clare of Assisi:

"What you hold, may you always hold.
What you do, may you always do and never abandon.
But with swift pace, light step, and unswerving feet,
so that even you steps stir up no dust,
go forward securely, joyfully, and swiftly,
on the path of prudent happiness..."

I am listening…
to The Story of the Bible. So well done!

Around the house...
I am dying to show you what Ranger has been working on since April. It is incredible! I was trying to wait for the finished version but, since we may never have enough bricks for that, I might just have to share "phase one" sometime soon.

At a local toy store filling a bag with some more grey LEGO for a special project he has been working on since April!
#neverenoughlego

One of my favorite things...
morning snuggles.

9:00 am and my little night owl is still working on waking up

This week's plans
Continue enjoying our summer break and our fairly relaxed schedule. It's been a great summer!

A little peek at my day...

Completely content in his little chair with his stack of books.

Wooden Saint Dolls & Nesting Blocks

Last night I walked into the living room just in time to hear our little guy say "It's nighttime!" as he was building beds for all of the saints. "Sssshhhhhhhh!"

When our old schoolroom became the younger boys' bedroom a couple years ago I had to find new homes for everything that was kept in there previously. These awesome blocks, that had been displayed on the shelves and played with occasionally, ended up being placed in a basket in the living room and are now played with nearly every day.  They are the perfect size for our various wooden saint doll collections, the small dolls I handprinted years ago and the larger dolls that have been handprinted, purchased or given to our family. The German-made wooden nesting blocks are worth the expense and have held up beautifully!

Our nesting block collection includes:

"Little Flower" Wooden Puzzle Stacker - Large

Wooden Tree Nesting Blocks (first birthday gift)

Fire Flames Wooden Nesting Blocks - Large

Rainbow Stacker Wooden Nesting Blocks - Large

Stone Caves Wooden Nesting Blocks - Large

Water Waves Wooden Nesting Blocks - Large

Casa Sole Fantastical Stacking Blocks

Wooden Fairy Tale Village Block/Puzzle Set

These sets make excellent gifts for birthdays and Christmas!
