Conversation Hearts Bible Verse Valentines

The feast of St. Valentine is coming up and we've been busy creating Valentine Cards to pass out  to friends and family.  I've already shared our Bible Candy Valentines and today I wanted to show you the Valentines Twinkle Toes has been creating with Conversation Hearts!  After a quick search through the Catholic Douay-Rheims Bible we found a verse from 1 Peter that tied in nicely to the candies and then created tags to attach to each box.

But according to him that hath called you, who is holy, be you also in all manner of conversation holy. 1 Peter 1:15

After cutting out the tags she punched a small 1/8 inch hole in each and tied them to the boxes of Conversation Hearts with some White Crochet Thread. (affiliate links) Like the Bible Candy Valentines, they were also quick and easy to make and turned out so cute!

Bible Candy Valentines {Tutorial & Free Printable}

Love is Patient, Love is Kind
1 Corinthians 13:4

This year for our upcoming St. Valentine's Day card exchange, Snuggles decided to create Bible Candy Valentines to give to his family and friends!  I've run across variations of this idea in the past, some using Avery labels to create the text or silver wrapped candies.  We opted to create our own text boxes so that the "gold gilding" (on the edges of the bible pages) would show.  It was such a fun craft. Snuggles really enjoyed assembling the Bibles and can't wait to hand them out next week on St. Valentine's feast!

Bible Candy Valentines

Supplies:

  • 1 bag of Hershey's Nuggets *Affiliate link (I purchased the 18 oz "Family Bag" of Milk Chocolate with Toffee & Almond, wrapped in gold)
  • 1-2 sheets of Black Card Stock cut into 2.25" x 1.5" cards
  • 1/8" Red Ribbon cut in 2 1/2" to 3" lengths
  • Scissors and Glue Stick
  • Printable (or create your own)

I love it when our crafts/activities tie in nicely to our other studies.
This week in Math we have been practicing counting by 2's! :)

Assemble:

  1. Glue about 1/2" of the ribbon to the middle of your black paper rectangle.
  2. Add additional glue to the paper and center the wrapped chocolates on the paper, side by side, over the red ribbon.
  3. Cut out the printed text (from printable or create your own) and fold in half.  Cover the back with glue and attach it to the top of the chocolates, sticking the folded center down the middle of the two chocolates, creating the appearance of an open bible.
  4. Take the ribbon and put a little glue in the center of the side facing you. Bring the ribbon over the two pieces of chocolate and place it right down the middle of the open pages. You might need to press the ribbon down gently (with your finger or a paperclip) so it will stick. Let dry completely.

Snuggles added additional To/From labels to the back of each.

February Daybook on the Feast of St. Blaise

Roses are red, violets are blue,
Angels in heaven know I love you.

Outside my window...
Yes, those were our children out there in the front yard wrapped in blankets early this morning, trying to stay warm while I searched the house trying to figure out what was burning...  The smoke was coming from a light fixture in the little boys' room.

I am thinking...
It's nice to have electricians in the family! My Dad and Mom were on an airplane headed to Hawaii this morning (My Dad rarely travels, but Mom talked him into going over to watch a golf tournament my brother will be competing in this week!) but my brother Brian returned my call and headed over to take a look at the wiring for me in exchange for some lunch. Even though it ended up being just the lightbulb (Whew!!!!)  I had him take down the fixture (wall sconce) anyways, since we need to rearrange the furniture to make room for a bunk bed for the boys.

I am thankful...
for those the two new bookcases! I assembled them last week and filled them with some of the books from the little boys' room, which was our old schoolroom.  We still seem to have more books than shelves, but I'm getting a little closer to finding homes and getting them all organized once again.

Learning all the time...
Saturday, while Sean was at work, we spent some time learning about Mary Cassatt and creating some artwork before heading outside to enjoy the sunshine for the rest of the afternoon.  I'll post pictures of their completed art projects soon.

Celebrating the liturgical year...
St. Brigid, Candlemas, St. Blaise, and so many more wonderful saints and feasts to celebrate and read about this month!

From the kitchen...
Candlemas Cookies with Drip Plates and Saint Blaise Sticks!

I am working on...
plans for Rascal's birthday this coming Friday.  When I asked him what sort of theme he'd like this year he asked if it could be a surprise! :)

I am creating...
homemade Valentine cards with Rose and Snuggles! I'll share some pictures of our creations sometime soon, but in the meantime, aren't these Vintage Valentines adorable?

I am going...
to pre-order Lent at Ephesus.

I am hoping...
that I will hear back from our pediatrician soon. Last week we took our oldest to see his pediatrician for an evaluation and to begin some testing for a reoccurring problem (violently vomiting for hours) he has been having every 1-2 months this past year, and again last week. Hopefully we can figure out the cause (and a solution) before it happens again. Thank you to everyone who has been praying for him!

I am praying...
for a few special intentions and an increase of true, sacrificial love within our family during this month of February, which is dedicated to the Holy Family.

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, like you we are members of the Father's family. We pray that our family love may reflect his love on its openness to all people. May we forgive even when not forgiven, and be patient with others' weaknesses.

Jesus, give us peace, unit and strength to meet the difficulties of daily living. May we use our family resources to improve the quality of life for ourselves and all people. Let us show joy in serving, for whatever we do for others, we do for you.

Mary, inspire us, that our love may be strong but not possessive. Let our willingness to give depend on the needs of others rather than on the cost of giving.

Joseph, help us to be attentive to the Father's will. Let us be ready, as you were, to act whenever he calls us.

I am reading...
Cranberry Valentine and making plans with Snuggles and Rose to bake a Cranberry Upside Down Cake (using the recipe on the back cover) with the cranberries in the freezer.

Pondering these words...
which begin the chapter titled "The Wounds of Childhood" in The Context of Holiness (one of my birthday gifts!) by Marc Foley, and thinking back to some of those events in my own childhood.  I think I'm really going to like this book.

There are certain events in life, deaths, births, marriages, divorces, and critical life choices that cut life in two. They determine "before" and "after" for us. They are definitive moments after which life will never be the same...

I am listening...
to Snuggles and Rose having a hilarious little conversation. They are across the room from each other and talking on their calculators cellphones.

Around the house...
legos. This afternoon I was about to "kill a spider" when one of the kids said, "Mom!  It's just a lego!" That "lego" looked way too real on our tile entryway floor.

One of my favorite things...
the smell of beeswax candles. Mmmmmmmmm

This week's plans...
  • Math Tutors (at home) on Tuesday and Thursday
  • Post Office, Library, and a few other errands
  • Rascal's 12th Birthday -
  • Dinner/Auction Fundraiser for the local crisis pregnancy home

A little peek at my day...
Nope.  I'm not going to share a picture of the smoking lightbulb, the little black "spider" I was about to smash, the mountain of laundry I have yet to catch up after falling behind while sick last month, the lunch crumbs on the floor, or the piles of school books on the countertops.  I prefer to focus my camera lens on the peaceful and precious moments that are sprinkled throughout the day in spite of the craziness of large family life. ♥

Let us go forward in peace, our eyes upon heaven,
the only one goal of our labors. ~ St. Therese of Lisieux

Celebrating St. Valentine's Day 2013

What a week!   Coordinating a Latin Mass last Sunday at our parish, the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes on Monday and finding out that our Holy Father is resigning, Fat Tuesday, Ash Wednesday, and then St. Valentine's Day all back to back!  We then had the tutor here most of Friday - which was definitely a good thing since it forced us to keep up with our school work in addition to everything else... But boy was I cranky and ready for a break this weekend, especially since I started the week tired!  In fact, I went to Confession and Mass by myself last night so I could enjoy a few (very rare) quiet hours at home alone today!  ;)  I am really looking forward to this coming week to focus on (hopefully) very simple Lenten days and school work.  We'll see!  Anyways, here are a few pictures from St. Valentine's Day, and the party we attended at our friends home.

.: Saint Valentine's Day Breakfast :.

Heart Shaped Eggs and Toast for Breakfast

.: Cupcakes for the Party :.

Triple Chocolate Cupcakes with Nutella Cream Cheese Frosting
(one for each of the kids at the party and one for my brother who was born on St. Valentine's Day!)
Frosting:  1 pkg cream cheese, 1/2 cup butter, 2 cups powdered sugar, and two big spoonfuls of Nutella
Top with heart sprinkles and marshmallows

.:  Party Time :.

.: Valentine Cards and Treats :.

Delivering their Valentine Cards and Treats to all of their friends.

Twinkle Toes decided to CEREALsly bless her friends this year!

Rascal (in memory of Sparkle) gave out Goldfish Snacks,  Snuggles and Rose choose fun shaped pretzles, and Chiquita opted for Candy Rings "to save for Sunday!"

.: Valentine's Day Pictionary :.

As Chiquita was trying to illustrate "Honey" with a Bear holding honey, Snuggles yelled out, "I KNOW!!! It's a Reindeer drinking COFFEE!!!!"  We had to remind him that it was a St. Valentine's Day theme, and not Christmas.  It was so funny!  Interestingly enough, he ended up being Santa Claus for the Valentines Day Matchmaker Game

.: Cupid's Arrows :.

Another game that my friend Trina had for the kids to play was Cupid's Arrows.  She set up a table with two hearts (bowls), one for each team.  Gave each child their own straw, and each team a large pile of q-tips.  She set a timer and told the “Cupids” that they had to get as many “arrows” into their heart as possible. To do this you must place the straw in your mouth, load it with an “arrow,” and then blow the “arrow” out the end of the straw towards the bowl. The team with the most arrows through the heart wins.  They had a blast!

.: Saint Valentine's Day Mailboxes :.

First thing this morning my children pulled out all of their sugar cereals and candies to enjoy.  It is the First Sunday of Lent after all!

Homemade St. Valentine's Day Cards

This past Friday, and then again yesterday afternoon, we spent some time making cards to exchange for St. Valentine's Day!   This year I had each of the children come and take a look at some of the ideas I had pinned to see if there was anything that they wanted to try making.   It was so much fun, and I was so proud of myself only using supplies that I could find around the house, without making a trip to the craft store!

.:  Valentine Handprint Cards :.

Rose and I decided to make these adorable little cards from Rosy ~ Posy.  At first she was very excited, but quickly changed her mind as soon as she felt the paint on her hands.   After making six cards she had had enough, and we went back to adding I love you to the middle heart later.

.: Love Blossom Trees:.

Snuggles liked the idea of making this Love Blossom Tree and from Meet the Dubiens.  He had so much fun making these, and ended up acting just a little silly in the process!

I thought they turned out so pretty, and I love that he used his arm, hand and thumbprints to create the painting!

.: Cute Cards and Cookies :.

Chiquita had her eyes on some scrapbooking paper in my stash and decided to make her own cards, to pair with some more dipped Oreo cookies, like we have made in the past.

She decided to use Golden Oreos this year, though we almost went with the new "Neapolitan" edition.  She packaged them up in bags and attached her cute little cards to each.

.: St. Valentine and "I Love You" :.

Twinkle Toes loved the "I Love You" (in sign language) Valentine Cards that I had pinned from Waltzing Matilda.  "Thank you Miss Charlotte!!"   She traced the her hand in the shape of the "I Love You" sign, cut them out, and then made a pocket with her hand to hold the St. Valentine card.  She wrote the little poem on the back, "Love is Patient, Love is Kind, Happy feast of St. Valentine!" and signed her name on the back of each St. Valentine Card.

To go along with her cards, she decided to dip large pretzels into melted pink candy, and then decorate them with valentine sprinkles.

.: Soda Pop Valentines:.

When Rascal saw these Soda Pop Valentines from Daring Doodles, he immediately decided that those were the ones for him.   They were so easy too.   We just printed out the free printable image for him to cut out and attached them to some small soda bottles and cans that his dad picked up at the grocery store.

.: Don't Go Changin' :.

Captain liked the idea of these "Don't Ever Change" Valentine cards from Jac o'lyn Murphy.  I even happened to have a few extra bags of Chocolate Coins leftover from Christmas/Epiphany for him!  We created little tags to print and tie on to the packages.   It looks like I only got a finished picture of his cards (though I "erased" his name from the picture).

All of our homemade goodies are packed up, along with some St. Valentine's Day Printables, and we are headed out the door for Bud's 2 month check up, and then to a friend's home for the afternoon.   I hope you all have a very lovely feast of St. Valentine today!

Heavenly Father, we ask You to guide our children in the choice of spouse.
Don't let them be carried away by false charms or be fascinated by mere outward glamour, but guide their minds to look beneath and beyond all external attractiveness for the deeper things which alone are worth while.  And especially let the choice be of one who is a fervent Catholic, true in thought and word and deed to those ideals which are Yours especially the value of their purity.  Dear Father of us all, give Your guiding help to our children, who are Your children too. We'll be letting them go soon, but please, don't ever let our children go from You. Amen.

St. Valentine, patron of romantic love, pray for us!
