Little Flowers Girls' Club ~ Loyalty

Here are a few of the highlights from our Little Flowers Girls' Club Meeting for the Wreath II virtue of Loyalty and St. Lucy:

~ Meeting and Notebook Pages ~

Amy gave the talk on Loyalty for this meeting and read a story about St. Lucy from the lovely book Around the Year Once Upon a Time Saints by Ethel Pochocki.

The notebook page for St. Lucy was my favorite from this past year.   It was simple, but I just loved the image of St. Lucy and thought the page turned out so pretty.  We started with red and white cardstock.  I then found a poppy flower border (flipping it for the right side of the page) to decorate the corners.  I also typed the St. Lucy prayer so that, when it was cut out by the girls, it would be heart shaped.    The document I made can be downloaded here.

Here is my sample page:

Since the flower for this meeting was a Poppy, I ordered the Memorial Poppies with Poem from Oriental Trading and replaced the poem with the memory verse.

Had this meeting taken place in November or December I would have loved to make Santa Lucia Crowns with the girls again.  Maybe next time!

Santa Lucia Day

Saint Lucy, you did not hide your light under a basket, but let it shine for the whole world, for all the centuries to see. We may not suffer torture in our lives the way you did, but we are still called to let the light of our Christianity illumine our daily lives.

Please help us to have the courage to bring our Christianity into our work, our recreation, our relationships, our conversation every corner of our day. Amen.

Happy Santa Lucia Day!

Our Santa Lucia's Braided Bread turned out delicious, the girls looked darling in their nightgowns and crowns, and they really enjoyed "waking" the (very awake yet cooperative) boys. Although it has already melted, we even woke up to our very first snowfall of winter!

I've been busily painting more Wooden Saints (I need to hurry, since I would like to give the whole set to the girls with their Christmas Present), Snuggles is sleeping, and the rest of our kiddos are playing board games with their daddy. I love Saturdays!!!

So, what are you up to this weekend?

O glorious Santa Lucia, who combined the profession of faith with the glory of martyrdom, help us to openly profess the truths of the Gospel and to walk in faith according to the teachings of our Savior.

Oh Virgin of Syracuse, be thou the light in our life and the model for our actions so that, after following in thy footsteps here on earth, we can rejoice together with thee in the vision of our Lord. Amen.

An Alphabet of Saints

Next week we will begin Along the Alphabet Path.

Along with each letter of the alphabet the children will be introduced (or re-introduced as the case may be) to a Saint using the beautiful book An Alphabet of Catholic Saints.

Elizabeth suggests making a Wee Felt Saint each week. They are darling, however I decided it might be fun to try my hand at painting instead, inspired by Catholic Folk Toys. So, while I was grocery shopping on Saturday, I picked up an inexpensive paintbrush and a bottle of skin tone paint -- I had other colors in my craft bin from some projects I planned last year, which were never completed. I do need to pick up a bottle of blue sometime.

I had never been very good at drawing or painting, but they didn't turn out too bad! I truly surprised myself and my family. My husband said he was "impressed," and Captain said, "WOW mom! I didn't know you were an artist!" It was very cute, and made my day, though I am sure the Saints must have been helping me!!

I painted most of Saturday afternoon/evening and then a couple more hours on Sunday evening. I have only finished A-J, but couldn't wait to share them with you!

I do need to seal them somehow... any suggestions out there for this amateur?

(Updated to add: I'll continue updating this post, as I paint more saints.)
