Red, White and Boom!

I hope you all had a fun filled Fourth of July weekend!  Our weekend was a blast, filled with a lots of great friends, delicious food, and ending with a fireworks show late last night.

Chiquita decorated a cake to take to the BBQ we attended on the Fourth, which was hosted by some friends who just arrived back in town!  My boys are so excited to have their dear friend (who loves Strategy Games and "War" as much, if not more than they do!) back for the summer.

We have company coming over tomorrow for some more Saintly Summer Fun and I need to go and finish getting ready... But, before I go, here is one of the highlights from the birthday BBQ we attended on Sunday for another friend.   The kids absolutely LOVED this little hands on off science lesson given by Rascal's Godfather:

Exploring Creation with Botany Lap Book :: Part 1

THE FRONT COVER

This year, for Science, my children have been studying Botany using Exploring Creation with Botany.   At the beginning of the year I purchased the Notebooking Journal, Exploring Creation with Botany Lapbook Lessons 1-5 and Exploring Creation with Botany Lapbook Lessons 6-13.

I really should have ordered just one or the other  (Journals or Lapbooks), and I really loved the new Notebooking Journal, however, since my children really enjoy lapbooking, we opted to complete the lapbooks this year.   We have been taking our time, and we just finished the first Lap Book (of two) a couple weeks ago and moved on to the second half of the book.  Here are some pictures of the completed lap books:

Working on the Seed Dispersal Mini-Books

As the children completed their mini-books, we stored them in a plastic zip-lock bag until they were ready to assemble to whole lap book.  We started doing this after a cup of water was spilled on most of their mini-books for Part 2 of their Astronomy Lap Book Last Year.   ;)

These illustrations were done by Captain.  I just loved the detail that went into this mini book!  It looks like I only got a picture of his, and not the other two. . .

Dry Fruits; Fleshy Fruits; Name these Flowers; Evidence; Why do most; Draw Your Favorite Flower; Amazing Fact; Word Search

Carnivorous Plants

In our current Botany Lesson on Flowers, the children (the boys especially) loved learning about Carnivorous Plants.   Since one of the projects for this lesson was to "Build a Clay Model of a Flower," Rascal immediately decided to build a Venus Flytrap and then continued on to make all four of the carnivorous plants that they had studied.  The book suggested using Play-Doh, Clay, or Salt Dough, but personally we love using our Modeling Beeswax.  I thought he did a great job and wanted to share a picture with your all:

The Sundew, The Pitcher Plant, The Venus Flytrap, and The Bladderwort

Captain decided to just make a pretty red Lily (to the left of Rascal's Venus Flytrap pictured below), and Twinkle Toes also opted for a Lily (on the right), like the ones they had just finished dissecting.

They have also really been enjoying working on the various mini-books for their Botany Lap Book.  The following illustrations are from Captain's Carnivorous Plant  Layered Book:

As the children complete each mini-book/activity for their Lap Books, we have been storing them in gallon sized ziplock bags (one for each child) and they will compile their first Lap Book as soon as they complete the fifth lesson.   After that they will begin working on a second Lap Book for the remainder of the year.   I'm sure we will post picture of the completed Lap Books, when the are finished.
