New Additions to Our February Book Basket

I've been working on filling our book basket with books for February. I love choosing one or two saint books each month to add to our family's ever growing collection. Here are our new additions for this February:

A Story of Saint Blaise
by Brother Franklin Cullen, C.S.C. (In the Footsteps of the Saints)
Exact reprint of 1958 Dujarie Press printing. This story of Saint Blaise is set in the year 316, during a great persecution of Christians. Always having a strong desire to help others, Saint Blaise became a doctor, then a priest, and later the Bishop of Sebaste in Armenia. Saint Blaise is credited with many miracles, including one where he cured a little boy who was choking on a fishbone. Today, many people attend Mass on February 3rd to receive the Blessing of Saint Blaise on their throats. Reading this story can encourage us to follow in the footsteps of Saint Blaise, whose kindness and love for others enabled him to be a channel of God's grace to those who asked for his assistance.

Saint Bakhita of Sudan
by Virginia Helen Richards (Comicolor Saints)
also available directly from Pauline
Comicolor Saints are ideal for those who want more than a coloring book. In Saint Bakhita of Sudan, children find themselves drawn into the story of this African woman who was captured as a slave as a young girl. She was sold in the slave trade until she was taken to Italy and became the servant of Mrs. Michieli. She experienced kindness for the first time since she had been stolen from her family. She went to school with the Canossian sisters and eventually became a Catholic and a Canossian sister herself. Children will learn the value of each person, the virtue of hope and the promise of God's care for us, and the beauty of forgiveness. This coloring book also features cut-out trading cards, activities, and games.

I'm also planning to start reading Their Hearts Are His Garden to my littlest ones this February. We've had this beautiful book in our collection since our oldest was a baby. It starts with a sweet little story about God's Love (Part I: Basic) and even includes a short story about St. Valentine (Part IV: The Saints). We will read the first few parts during the month of February and then continue Part V: The Liturgical Year throughout the year. We have the OOP version from The Neumann Press (and TAN is currently sold out), but it you can find a copy it is definitely worth adding to your own collection!

Their Hearts are His Garden: Stories for Children
A beautiful garden full of stories that children will love, but best of all, stories that will remain forever in their hearts. It is a perfect teaching aid for children from ages 3-8. Separated into five parts—Part I: Basics, Part II: The Way of Virtue, Part III: Mother and Father, Part IV: The Saints, Part V: The Church Year—and with fifty-nine stories or subjects such as Baptism, Birthdays, Patron Saints, God’s Love, The Cross, Heaven, Angels and Guardians, Prayer, Praying, Truth, St. Valentine, The Rosary, Christmas, Easter, etc. In the book’s Introduction we read “. . . It is the problem and the privilege of the religious teacher, whether at home or in the classroom, to foster and sustain in the child habits of thinking and acting as a child of God. . . . Desirable habits in the natural order should be launched under pleasurable circumstances.” Be assured this book qualifies over and over. (Imprimatur 1940).

Saints n' Stitches

Back in October I shared a couple pictures and mentioned that our older girls have been enjoying learning how to embroider using the Saints n' Stitches kits they received in their Easter Baskets earlier this year.  (You can see a couple pictures of our youngest two with their completed dolls on Easter morning. They still love their precious saint dolls!)  These sweet little kits or the completed dolls would also make perfect stocking stuffers!

Charlotte is offering the kits once again for a LIMITED TIME!!!

The Little Habit {Sponsored Giveaway}

The Little Habit is an Etsy shop which was recently opened by Summer Dubay, a creative and talented Catholic wife and mother of eight from Southern California. Some of you may recognize Summer from her gluten free guest submissions over at Catholic Cuisine! You can read more about Summer and The Little Habit here.

I fell in love with all the darling habits the moment I discovered Summer's new shop! They are absolutely precious.

Like last Christmas, I'm hoping to give each of our children at least one faith-based gift and this year the girls will be receiving some of these sweet habits to add to their American Girl Doll Collection.  I haven't shown the pictures to my girls yet, but I know they will fall in love with them too when they discover them under the tree on Christmas morning!

It's hard to choose a favorite, but I especially love the sweet Carmelite Nun Habit with the coordinating cross and picture frame. Of course this one will be for our little "Rose."

Chiquita will be receiving the beautiful Poor Clare Nun Habit with Monstrance, and Twinkle Toes will receive the lovely Dominican Nun Habit with the St. Rose of Lima Pink Wreath.

I also ordered the Gentle Mary White Dress and Blue Cape and will either give it to Rose on her birthday in December or save it for her Easter Basket next year.

Summer's latest creation is the gorgeous LIMITED EDITION Guardian Angel Dress. She stated in the description that she only has six sets of wings available and once they are sold they will be gone for good. I think I am going to have to take advantage of the free shipping code below to order this one as well while it's still available! (Update: I just placed my order and now there are only four left! If you are interested in this dress don't wait to place your order!)

The Little Habit is currently offering all my visitors here at Shower of Roses FREE SHIPPING with coupon code ROSESFREESHIP. The free shipping is good with a minimum $35 purchase and will expire on St. Nicholas day, December 6, 2014.

As Shower of Roses and The Little Habit are both dedicated to St. Therese, the winner of this giveaway will receive one Carmelite Habit! The Carmelite Habit includes: 1 veil, 1 lycra coif, 1 guimpe, 1 scapular, 1 habit, 1 ribbon belt, and 1 cape.

Please enter the giveaway using the Rafflecopter box below:

Update: The Little Habit will be taking final orders for Christmas on December 10th. The shop will then close for the rest of Advent and the Christmas season. It will reopen on January 7, 2014 with new surprises! Thank you for your amazing support! God bless, Summer.

New Saint Books for the November Book Basket

Our November Book Basket has been filled for the month and I have a few new additions to share with you all! I'm especially excited about the addition of The Story of St. Elizabeth of Hungary by William Canton, originally published in 1912, which has just recently been reprinted. (St. Elizabeth of Hungary is one of the two patron saints I choose at my Confirmation.) I try to choose a couple chapter books on the lives of the saints to read aloud to the children each month and I plan to start reading The Story of St. Elizabeth of Hungary, in preparation for her feast day, just as soon as it arrives. After that we will move on to God's Secret Agent which is out of print, but we happen to have a copy from my (or maybe this one if from my husband's) childhood collection.

by William Canton

(reprinted by St. Augustine Academy Press)

Those who delight in Canton's other well-loved children's books, A Child's Book of Saints and A Child's Book of Warriors, will find much to satisfy in his Story of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary.

Canton has consulted some of the earliest sources to assemble a tale as rich in historical detail as it is in poetic beauty.

Saint Elizabeth's sweetness and generosity are brought to life in these pages, now beautifully retypeset and enhanced with a map showing the locations as they were in 13th century Europe, as well as the breathtaking full-color illustrations of Eleanor Fortescue Brickdale, found in the original 1912 edition.

Other Additions to Our November Book Basket:

A Story of Saint Cecilia
by Brother Ernest, C.S.C. (In the Footsteps of the Saints Series)
This story of Saint Cecilia is set during the papacy of Urban I, which began in the year 222. Reading this story about Saint Cecilia can help us to see how the sacrament of Baptism can strengthen our faith in God and help us view the world in a new light!

by Virginia Helen Richards (comicolor saints)
Saints come to life when kids can read, color, and play all in one book! This comic-style coloring book with cut-out trading cards, activities, and games teaches children about the amazing life of Blessed Miguel Pro. Born in Mexico in 1891, he was the third of eleven children. During Miguel's life, Catholicism was banned in Mexico. Anyone caught practicing the Catholic faith was persecuted. Despite this risk, Miguel became a Jesuit priest and courageously celebrated Mass and administered the sacraments. His cheerfulness and great sense of humor encouraged many of his Catholic countrymen. He was eventually martyred, expressing his love for Jesus with the words "Long live Christ the King."

Andrew the Apostle
by S.E. Danielski (In the Footsteps of the Saints Series)
Saint Andrew was the brother of Saint Peter, the first Pope of the catholic Church. After listening to the teachings of St John the Baptist, Saint Andrew became the first disciple of Jesus. Reading this story can encourage us to follow in the footsteps of St Andrew who answered the call to holiness and brought others to Jesus.

All Saints Scavenger Hunt {Another Printable Party Game Featuring 16 Additional Saints & New Clues!}

A couple years ago we created an All Saints Scavenger Hunt {Printable Party Game!} for our annual All Saints Party and shared it here at Shower of Roses. This year I have a second version of the game to share!

Like last time, I have printed 16 saint cards which I will hand out to 16 of the adults. The children will each receive the list of clues, and they will need to match each clues to the correct saint. Once the child thinks he knows who it is, he will ask the person representing (holding the picture of) the saint. If he is correct the "saint" signs the line next to the correct clue on his child's clue sheet. You can see some pictures of the game being played here.

Here are the clues that my husband and I came up with for the second version of this game:
Unless, of course, you'll be at our party… In that case please skip the rest of this post! ;)
