The Game of Graces

One of the games I choose for the girls to play during this year's Mother-Daughter Tea Party was the game of Graces, as suggested by Eliana.  It was so much fun!

According to Victorian World, Graces is a game that dates back to the 1830s. It was originally intended as an indoor parlour game, but could be played outdoors as well, and due to its popularity, it often was. It was a two-player game which used two wooden throwing rings, (usually decorated with ribbons), and four catching wands. Each player held two catching wands, one in each hand. The first player would place the rings over the wands which he/she held, then toss the rings, one at a time, to the other player. The winner was the player who had caught the most tossed rings within a set amount of time. It was generally considered a "girl's game" as it was meant to encourage gracefulness--hence, the name, "Graces."

We also read the following from the section on Colonial Party Games in our out of print copy of The American Girls Party Book:   Each player has 2 sticks. (Our girls used one "stick" each so that more girls could play at the same time.)  Dowels from craft or hardware stores work well. (I used knitting needles.) The players use the sticks to toss a small hoop, such as an embroidery hoop, back and forth. For fluttery fun, wrap ribbons around the hoop and let the ends hang down as streamers. Keep wrapping ribbons until the entire hoop is covered.

Beginning with Bocce Ball {and a few Group Photos!}

Despite a forecast of rain and snow the weather cooperated beautifully, even if it was cold, for our Mother-Daughter Tea Party and we were able to enjoy a few outdoor activities!  We started with a game of Bocce Ball in the backyard overlooking a beautiful golf course, as we waited for all of our guests to arrive.

"Bocce ball is a game of Italian origin that two to four people can play in the yard, on the beach or on a strip of gravel. Game balls come in two sizes and the goal, in essence, is to roll the large bocce balls closer to the small "target" ball, called the pallino, than your opponents manage to do. In each round, the player who gets closest to the pallino earns a point. It may seem easy, but the game requires precision and patience. Eye-hand coordination is your best asset for winning this game." - Ehow

In the meantime the moms stood around and chatted and the girls peeked through the windows at all the beautiful decorations... They were very excited for our tea to begin.

Once everyone had arrived, and before letting all the girls into the house for tea, we took a few quick group photos!

Little Flowers Girls' Club Tea Party Games

This coming weekend we will be having our annual Little Flowers Girls' Club Mother-Daughter Tea Party! Having completed all four wreaths last year, I did take this year off from coordinating and hosting Little Flowers for my girls, but we've decided that we still wanted to have the tea party.  A dear friend of mine, whose daughters were/are in the older Little Flowers group, has generously offered to host our tea this year at her home, using all the decorations from her daughter's groups annual tea party the day before!!!  This simplifies things incredibly for me!   I've already sent the invitations and assigned the food to the various girls (and Mothers) who will be attending and my girls will be wearing their Easter dresses, hats and gloves.  So that just leaves me with the games, prizes, and favors to plan.

I've spent some time this afternoon looking though all the games we have played in the past and thought I'd round them all up into one post.  At our tea parties we always take a short break to play a game or two in between each course, while the servers refill the trays for the next course.   This year we will be having a four-course tea so I need to decide on 3-4 games.   If the weather is nice we might be having a maypole this year, which would take care of one of the games.   Here's what we've playing in the past:

(You can also find a Wreath II Word Search Here)

Would you all help me decide?   This year we will have a group of about 13 girls ranging in age from 6-13, along with 6 mothers.  It would be great to include a new game or two, so if you have any suggestions or ideas for me I'd love for you to leave them in the comment box!

All Saints Scavenger Hunt {A Printable Party Game!}

One of the games I made last night, for our party this evening, is an All Saints Scavenger Hunt. Last year we used Charlotte's printable Search for the Saints, and the kids loved it, but I wanted to offer something a little different this year. I have printed 16 saint cards which I will hand out to 16 of the adults. The children will each receive the following list of clues, and they will need to match each clue to the correct saint. Once the child thinks he knows who it is, he will ask the person representing (holding the picture of) the saint. If he is correct the "saint" signs the line next to the correct clue on his child's clue sheet. Here are the clues that my husband and I came up for our game:

All Saints' Day Party Games :: A Saintly Jigsaw Puzzle Race!

My kids are getting so excited!   All Saints' Day is coming up next week, which means our Annual All Hallows' Eve Party is just around the corner. Last year our family decided to host a "small" party at our home, instead of the carnival style party at the parish hall, and it was such a blast!   Despite feeling slightly (okay, very!) overwhelmed with everything that needs to still be done, I keep reminding myself that it actually was pretty easy to host and I already have so much ready, left over from last year!   I just need to work on cleaning up the house... ;)

This year, in addition to the All Saints Bingo, St. Isidore's Pumpkin Roasting, and an Outdoor Flashlight Scavenger/Treasure Hunt that a friend is helping coordinate, I've been trying to come up with a couple more new games.   Since the Cupcake Puzzle Race was such a hit at our Little Flowers Tea Party, I thought it would be perfect!

My goal was to find a couple 100 piece puzzles representing either saints or biblical figures.  I ran across some made by EuroGraphics and decide to go with Jesus the Fisherman (with the apostles!) and David & Goliath.   (Other options included Daniel and the Lions and Moses.)

I opened up the boxes and was very pleased with the quality - the puzzle pieces are very durable and should be able to withstand many little fingers!  At the party we will probably break the kids that are interested in playing into groups of 4, but this afternoon my four oldest broke into two teams to give it a try.

They each choose a puzzle and I set the timer.  I couldn't believe that, 18 minutes and 24 seconds later, it was a TIE!  (I think at the Little Flowers Tea Party, with more people working on the puzzles, we completed them in about 12-15 minutes.) They had so much fun and are looking forward to playing again with their friends!

If you want to try this out, and don't want it to take quite so long, any 24 Piece Puzzle set would work as well.  I've also pulled out a few of our simple Catholic Puzzles for the younger children, or to have quick timed races.

You can find some of our past Saintly Games in the archives or listed in this post.

Little Flowers Bingo: Flowers & Gems {and other Printables!}

I thought it would be fun to play Bingo at Our Little Flowers Mother-Daughter Tea Party this year.  Instead of using the All Saints Bingo Cards I made last year for the All Saints Party we hosted, I made Bingo Cards using all the Flowers and Gems from the four Wreaths of Little Flowers.

* I started with the intent of making 30 printable cards, but stopped at 15 since that was all that I needed for our party.  If anyone is interested in more than 15, let me know and I will try and complete the set.

The final two games we played during our Tea Party were a A-Z Quest of the Blessed Virgin Mary, from That Resource Site, and a Wreath IV Saints & Gifts Word Search, which I made real quick the night before the party.   Note to self:  Make sure to proof read the Word Search next time!  I had everyone looking for two "Catherine's" and the generator I used decided I only needed to use it once!  Oops! I've removed the second from the word list in the download.   :)

Tea Party Games :: A Cupcake Jigsaw Puzzle Race!

You all know that my family loves puzzles, right?   So of course I had to find a way to tie them into Our Little Flowers Girl's Club Mother-Daughter Tea Party this year!  ;)  When a friend of mine mentioned some small "Cupcake" games & puzzles she had seen at Barnes & Noble they sounded perfect!

I ended up purchasing a 4 pack of 60 Piece Puzzles and two 100 piece puzzles, since I couldn't decide whether to break the group into 3-4 teams or 2 teams, for a "Cupcake Puzzle Race."  When I gave the girls the option, they all wanted to go with Mothers versus Daughters!  I gave them first pick of the two 100 piece puzzles and they choose the white cupcake with the pink flower on top.

*Only a couple of the puzzles are currently available on Barnes & Noble online, and Amazon doesn't seem to have these particular cupcake puzzles either,  but they do have a few other options. I especially love these little Nature Puzzles.

I put the moms at our train coffee table and set a card table up for the girls.   With a "Ready, Set, Go!" we started the race!  It was very close, but us moms did end up winning!

It was SO. MUCH. FUN!!  I'll definitely be keeping "Puzzle Races" in mind for future parties!

Tea Party Games :: She Loves It... She Loves It Not!

When I was brainstorming ideas for this year's Mother-Daughter Tea Party, I thought it would be fun to revisit one of the games from our very first Little Flowers Tea Party now that the girls are all older!  This ended up being the first game we played after everyone had arrived, while the servers filled the trays for our first course.

Directions:

All you need is a daisy, or any other flower with lots of petals.  The first player plucks off a petal as she shares something that her mother or daughter loves.  The next player shares something her mother or daughter loves -- not!  The flower continues around the circle with mothers talking about their daughters, and daughters talking about their mothers, until the flower runs out of petals.

Apparently I love taking pictures, flowers, my girls, and children... And I do not love messy bedrooms, "us fighting", and dirty floors.  Sounds about right!  ;)
