For Sarah...

... who really should be having her baby, instead of reading blogs and cleaning light fixtures!  ;)   I didn't even need to "mess it up a little!"  When I take pictures in the kitchen, there is usually at least one counter surface that is carefully excluded.  Who wants to remember the messes?!?  I can assure you, we have plenty in our home, even if I don't take pictures of them very often.  :)

And... If anyone has any great tips for all the paper clutter, that goes along with home educating, I'd love to hear them.  I'm hoping to tackle the disaster that is in our school room this weekend!

Nesting Project #2

I have been wanting to paint the toddler bed for years, and yesterday I somehow managed to get it done, in between assembling closet organizers!

I forgot to take a "before" picture, but here is one from last week, during nap time.   Rose finally agreed to sleep in the toddler bed (we have been trying to move her since she recently climbed/fell out of the crib), as long as the bumper was on the toddler bed for some reason.

Since the crib is white, I decided to paint the toddler bed white to match.   I also thought the white would look nice against the Buttercream walls.

I was so surprised at how easy it was to do, and I can't believe that I waited this long (6+ years) to paint that little bed!
(When rearranging the furniture, I didn't really have anywhere, but at the base of the bed, for the little kitchen.  That doesn't look too bad, does it?)

Even Rose was excited to sleep in her "new bed."  That is, just as long as we made sure to read/sing her latest favorite picture book!

Small Successes: September 15, 2011

Subtitled: Nesting Project #1

"It’s important for moms to recognize that all the small successes in our days can add up to one big triumph. So on Thursday of each week, we do exactly that."

~ 1 ~

Yesterday afternoon I made the long trip to Home Depot, and picked up some closet organizers for our nursery!   Like the older girls' bedroom, which was also built with the intention to add a closet "someday," I decided not to wait any longer and just create a "closet" along one wall.   The toy box will have to go and the rest of the furniture needed to be rearranged (I'm still trying to decide how it will look the best), but I think it will be so helpful to have somewhere (other than just the changing table) to put both Rose's and the new baby's clothing.

~ 2 ~

Not only did I use a screw driver, hammer and drill to assemble the closet organizers last night and today to assemble the closet organizers, I also figured out how to use a Circular Saw (to cut the shelves) and a Hack Saw (to cut the metal rods which were too long - finished one, and have three left to go)!   My husband is going to come home and wonder who I am and what I did with his wife! ;)

I plan to eventually purchase some Fabric Drawers for the cubbies/shelves (maybe in sage green?) and someday I would also like to get the doors and drawers (like the girls have) to complete the "closet."  But I am really happy with how it is coming together!

~ 3 ~

While I was working in the nursery, I also pulled out the jar of touch up paint (it's sitting on the bookshelf in the picture below) and covered all the scrapes, scratches and marks all around the room.   It is starting to look so much more ready for another baby!

Now, on to the next project...
That is, after a quick trip to town to recycle boxes and a stop by Dairy Queen as a little surprise for the kids, and as a little extra "thank you" for all their help!

Please Pray!

"Six fires in (our little town) are threatening homes.
A column of smoke can be seen across the valley."

Please pray for us!

UPDATE: Thank you all for your prayers! The fire closest to our home has grown to over 300 acres. However, at this time, it doesn't look like our home is in danger.  What a blessing and comfort it has been to have Father here to bless our home/property, and call the Carmelite Nuns for additional prayers! Please continue to pray for those whose homes are threatened, and for those fighting the fires. God bless!

Once Upon a Time...

I have a few extra minutes this afternoon and thought it would be fun to share a picture of what our home looked like when we first moved in nearly 11 years ago!  I remember the day my Dad called asking if we wanted to come and look at a "little house with so much potential" where he was doing some electrical work.  The sweet old woman who owned the home was planning on putting it up for sale so she could go and live with her daughter.

Other than the paved driveway, I don't see anything in this picture that hasn't been changed.  The retaining walls behind the house are gone... In fact, that is where the kitchen, dining room, and family room are now!  All that dirt got moved around to the side, creating a level play area for our children.  The chimney is now covered with stone.  The little "deck," orange front door, windows, siding, roof, etc, have all been replaced.  Not to mention it has nearly tripled in size.

Thankfully our little home has grown with our family, because I just can't imagine trying to fit all eight of us into the little two bedroom house that used to be here.  Deo Gratias!

My Daybook :: January 18, 2011

Outside my window... it isn't raining at the moment, and there are five little ones running around, climbing trees and enjoying the fresh air, while Rose naps.

I am listening to... Women in Chant: Recordare: Remembering the Mysteries in the Life of Jesus, Son of Mary.

I am thinking... about how being a home educating mother changes the way I look at things.  I never would have thought I would be so excited to receive flowers on my birthday, so that my children could dissect them for one of their Botany lessons! ;)

I am thankful for... my amazing family and all of my wonderful friends!  I turned 33 on Sunday, and had such a lovely day.   It started with Mass and a whole bunch of precious cards from my children.  (Not to mention all the birthday greetings on Facebook!) My brother and sister-in-law then watched our kids so that Hubby could take me to see The Voyage of the Dawn Treader and then meet my parents for dinner.  Then it was back home to for cake and to open a beautifully wrapped birthday gift which was sitting on the counter.   It was such a nice day!  I sure love my family and have been truly blessed!!

I am hoping and praying... that my niece's MRI goes well today, for a very special intention, and that my father-in-law has a quick recovery from his surgery.

From the kitchen... lots of leftover chocolate birthday cake, which I am trying not to eat! ;)  I am also trying to come up with meals with the food I have in my pantry and freezer this week.  I haven't gone grocery shopping since just before Christmas, but I think I should be able to pull off one more week if I have Hubby pick up some milk, fruits and vegetables.

Monday :: Chicken Cacciatore with Dinner Rolls
Tuesday :: Tacos, Steamed Corn and Spanish Rice
Wednesday :: Baked Steak in Tangy Tomato Sauce and Scalloped Potatoes
Thursday :: Get Yo' Man Chicken, Rice and Steamed Broccoli
Friday :: Brown Rice Vegetable Casserole
Saturday :: Grilled Tilapia with Steamed Veggies and Rice
Sunday :: Lasagna, Salad and Garlic Bread

From the learning rooms... I finally feel like we are making progress!   Each (weekday) morning we have been working on Religion, Language Arts (Handwriting, Phonics, Spelling, Writing and Grammar) and Math, which leaves the afternoons free to study Science, Geography, History, etc.  Following a schedule once again is really helping to get our days off to a good start, and use the time most efficiently.

Living the Liturgical Year at Home... we will be celebrating the feast of Our Lady of Altagracia later this week, on January 21st.    Last year I painted a little wooden peg doll in her honor, read A Gift of Gracias: The Legend of Altagracia and served Orange Smoothies.   I haven't quite finalized our plans for this year, but we just love all of Alice's Teas so I am leaning towards serving her Tea in Honor of Our Lady of Altagracia.

I am creating... a little village of paper houses with my girls, using the birthday gifts from my sweet Hubby!

I am wearing... the next size down!!!

I am reading... I haven't had much time for reading this past week, but I am hoping to get back to the books on my nightstand soon: Large Family Logistics, I Believe in Love: A Personal Retreat Based on the Teaching of St. Therese of LisieuxOlivia's Gift, and Small Steps for Catholic Moms.

On my iTouch... after seeing the Bob Books app suggested by others, I finally downloaded the Bob Books Lite version to try.  Chiquita loves using it, so I think I'll download the full app soon.

Pondering these words... from Chapter 10 of The Cure Of Ars, which Hubby read to all of us last night at dinner:

"To suffer lovingly is to suffer no longer.  To flee from the cross is to be crushed beneath its weight.  We should pray for a love of the cross - then it will become sweet."

Noticing that... blowing out 33 candles creates a LOT of smoke!!!  (... and that it was really hard for me to post this "really neat" picture that my children wanted me to share with you all! lol!)

Towards personal care... I am trying to keep the weight off, which I lost while I was sick off, and so far have been successful.   I was actually even able to lose a couple more pounds on top of the first seven, but those came right back due to the cake, coffee, and burger on my birthday...  Now that the coughing isn't nearly as bad as it was, I am hoping to start exercising again.   I'm not sure the balance games on the Wii Fit count? ;)

Around the house... The weekend before last, Hubby and I added curtains to the windows, to match the ones over the sliding glass door, in our bedroom and we just love them.   However, I must say that it has made getting up a bit harder since it stays so dark in the morning when they are closed!

On keeping home... Here is a favorite quote from St. Frances of Rome:

"It is most laudable in a married woman to be devout, but she must never forget that she is a housewife; and sometimes she must leave God at the altar to find Him in her housekeeping."

One of my favorite things... The "Watch Instantly" feature on Netflix!  While we were sick earlier this month we all watched (and loved!) The Sissi Collection.  We also enjoyed watching Booky and the Secret Santa (starring Megan Follows) and Booky's Crush.  Last week, before my sister headed back to college, she came over one night and we watched Relative Values (starring Julie Andrews).   Have you run across any great movies that are available to watch instantly?  I'd love a few suggestions!

A few plans for the rest of the week:
  • Doctors Appointment for Snuggles on Wednesday
  • Prepare for our next Little Flowers Girls' Club Meeting
  • Attend Mass on Friday and Sunday

A Picture thought I am sharing:

Small Successes :: November 11, 2010

"It’s important for moms to recognize that all the small successes in our days can add up to one big triumph. So on Thursday of each week, we do exactly that."

~ 1 ~

I was able to help my mom clean part of her attic this past Saturday!  It was nice to spend some time with her, and to be able to help my parents out for a change, especially after all they did to help us with our remodel this past summer!

~ 2 ~

There is something about helping to organize someone else's home that really inspires me to come home and organize my own...   I came home and cleaned and redecorated (aka: moved all the furniture around for the 10th time) the nursery.   Hubby and I were both amazed at the difference, and little Rose has been enjoying her "new" bedroom so much!

~ 3 ~

I survived yesterday!  Doctors Appointments, Dentist Appointments (including two fillings for myself), new tires on the van, and a few other errands - ALL with six children in tow.   Does that qualify as a "small" success? I'm not quite sure!  ;)  Oh!!  And we were even able to stop and take a few pictures of all the bears in town... More about that another time!

Happy Martinmas Day!!

Our New Kitchen

I've been dying to post a few more pictures of our new kitchen, ever since the cabinet maker installed the cabinet doors on Sep 24th!  You've seen little glimpses here and there, but I was waiting for a few last things to be finished before posting.  We're still waiting for the lights over the island, the shelves on the end of the island, and Hubby and I have yet to pick out cabinet hardware, but I'm going to post pictures anyways...  :-)

I took these pictures on September 25th, just before the baby shower, and I have been enjoying the kitchen each and every day since!   I had been so worried that I was going to mess it all up with our choices on cabinet colors and design, appliances, flooring, countertops, light fixtures (the list goes on and on), but it all came together so beautifully in the end!

For comparison, I took the following pictures in pretty much the same spots, both before and after the remodel/addition:

The kitchen grew both in length and in width...  The corner of the old kitchen had been just to the right of the far right corner of the new island!

I still can't believe we now have such a wonderful kitchen!  It is amazing how much easier it is to keep the kitchen clean with all the extra space, a separate dining area, not to mention the help of a DISHWASHER!!!   It is all SUCH a blessing, and well worth the 10+ years we have been waiting to remodel the kitchen!

Deo Gratias!

S is for Spring Cleaning!

We completed the letter "S" on our Alphabet Path last week, and I do plan to post some pictures soon.  This week we are taking another break and focusing on Spring Cleaning followed by a Spring Break next week for Holy Week!  I'm sure glad I got such a good jump start last year before the baby was born, allowing for all these "breaks."  :)

I am still working on filling those 40 Bags... I have six left, since I'm trying not to count anything that couldn't be donated (aka: trash).  I'm hoping that as we Spring Clean this week we'll be able to fill them up and be finished.

Yesterday we started our Spring Cleaning in the Master Bedroom.  I figured it was the one room that had the best possibility of staying clean, so I thought it would be a good place to start.

We all worked together and it didn't take too long at all.  It is now the cleanest it has been since last year

I had lots of (much needed!) help and we were able to get quite a few things checked off our list:
  • Remove Cobwebs
  • Dust light fixtures
  • Dust Ceiling Fan
  • Organize Bookshelf and Dust
  • Organize Night Stands
  • Put away any stray items
  • Clean Under Bed
  • Vacuum Under Nightstands & Bed
  • Wash Mattress Pad, Sheets and Dust Ruffle
  • Clean Windows (Inside)
  • Clean Mirror
  • Dust Statue & Crucifix
  • Dust Clock & Phone
  • Dust & Polish Furniture
  • Clean Fingerprints off Door, Walls & Switch plates
  • Vacuum Room

Still to do:
  • Replace light-bulbs in two of the ceiling can lights
  • Touch up paint scuffs in a couple spots
  • Clean Windows (Outside)
  • Look for Window Coverings
  • Find Decorative Pot for the Ficus Tree (a birthday gift from my mom)
  • Purchase new sheets (To replace the flannel, for Spring/Summer)
  • Fix Rocking Chair (This was another gift from my mom, last year.  It was given to her by my Grandma (Dad's Mom) when she was pregnant with me!  I need to try and figure out how to stop it from squeaking so badly... Any suggestions?)
Today we are moving on to the children's bedrooms.  I've spent so much time in them this past year that I'm hoping we can get all three done today...  I guess we will see!

The New School Room

I've been meaning to post a few pictures of our new school room for quite awhile, and just haven't had a chance until now.

This room has gone through many different stages.  When we first purchased our home over 9 years ago, just a few months before our oldest was born, it was to be the room for our children.   At one point it belonged to our three oldest just before we added on more bedrooms.  At that time, the closet was removed from this room (to add a little extra space to our small living room) and a hallway was built into it to attach the addition making it much smaller than before.  With the new bedrooms for the children, it became a storage guest room.  After Snuggles was born it then became the nursery.  Though, honestly, Snuggles rarely slept in this room.  In the winter months it is just too cold at night for a baby, plus being so snugly, he always preferred being close to his daddy and momma!  Now with another baby on the way, it was time to shift everyone around to make a little better use of our home.  The boys went to the old school room (which also was our old master bedroom when we first bought this home), the girls moved into the boys old room, Snuggles moved into the girls old room for now (he'll join his brothers in a year or so) with plenty of room for the baby to join him, and that left this room for school.  (Our home doesn't have a dining room, and the kitchen is just too small...)

It is much more cramped cozier than our old school room, but it should work just fine.  Plus, trying to figure out just what to do with everything has really helped in making our home a little more organized.

Well enough explaining, I'll get on with a few pictures!  I took these pictures a couple weeks ago (or so) and I am still in the progress of fine-tuning the room, which I am sure will be an ongoing process as we begin using it more often starting tomorrow, our first day of school for the year!

~ From the Doorway ~

My desk is just inside the door (it is a bit cluttered right now with two computers as I work on transferring everything over), the boys desks are on either side of the window, and the table takes up the rest is in the middle of the room.

Since taking this picture I did give-up on trying to squeeze around the end chair, and it has been moved out for now.  We don't really need it right now anyway.  You can also see the beginnings of the girls Madeline Lapbook in the basket on the table... It is still in progress and the girls have been having so much fun with this one.

~ The Boys Desks ~

The desk on the left has a built in bookcase on the end which I use for our CD's (Glory Stories, Music Masters, Wee Sing, and a few others) as well as all of our Father Lovasik books and other religious books.

The desk on the right didn't have a bookshelf, but I placed one I already had at the end to use as well, since I never seem to have enough room for all of our books.

The boys also have their shared American History timeline above their desks...

... as well as a basket each for their binders, geography scrapbooks, science lapbook, and Book of Centuries .

~ A little more artwork by my Aunt ~

~ Liturgical Year/Seasonal Shelf ~

I am hoping to paint this someday either brown or green... I will have to take a picture now that it is filled with all of our Feast of the Assumption books and crafts!

~ On the Opposite Wall from my Desk ~

There is our United States map... I am still trying to decide whether or not to hang up our World Map, or just stick with the globe.  It could go above my desk, but that's about it...  We'll see.

Our Art Shelf is below the map, on top of some stacking shoe organizers which are now holding puzzles, pattern blocks, lacing shapes, and other school time toys.  (Thanks again Jen for the inspiration!)

~ Just inside the Door ~

Just inside the door are some darling bells I purchased at the Homeschool Conference in May from Our Father's House, a picture of Our Lady of Mount Carmel (from the Monks in WY ) since she is the patron of our homeschool, a magnetic calendar for our saint magnets, and a little cabinet which holds some more books and craft supplies.

~ From the Window ~

I have my bookshelves along the hallway wall.  Here is another picture from a different angle... They were SO hard to photograph!

~ Lots of WONDERFUL Books ~

History and Liturgical Year Picture Books

Some of My Favorites!

And LOTS of paper and file folders.

As you can see, I've managed to cram quite a bit into a pretty small area, but right now everything has a place, it is organized, and it seems to be working much better than the old school room...

Now, I do have one area that still needs a little work... It is the shelf on TOP of the hallway, which you can see above the bookcases -- just not in any of the above pictures.

Here is a closer look:

It looks kind of funny right now with just the one curtain hanging down in the middle, but what my children don't know is that behind that curtain are quite a few of their Christmas gifts all wrapped and ready for December.

My plan is to keep items I am not using this year (or season) up and out of the way. I also want to try and find (or perhaps make) a few curtains that would nicely hide it all.  The rest of the craft supplies, the ones we use on a frequent basis, are now being stored in my closet -- and another work in progress as I try to organize it all, but it is coming along nicely.

So, there you go... A little peek at our School Room.   Now I am off to finish getting ready for tomorrow!!   I have a few Schultütes to make.
