{this moment} Saying Goodbye

“The world's thy ship and not thy home.”
― Saint Therese of Lisieux

It was so hard to say goodbye yesterday before driving back to our new home in Idaho... knowing that this could most likely be the last time all our children would be together at our home in Oregon before it sells. They have all lived in this home since birth and it has grown along with our family over the years. So many wonderful memories!

Our little wild one didn't want to cooperate while we were trying to get that one last picture of all the children outside their childhood home.

I've shared this picture before but wanted to share it again w. This is what the house look liked when we purchased it back in May of 2000, while I was on bedrest with our oldest son who was born a couple months later. The house has grown with our family over the years, first adding on three more bedrooms and two more bathrooms in 2005 when baby #4 was on the way, and then adding on a dining room and family room and remodeling/expanding the kitchen (scroll to bottom of linked post to see the original kitchen), original bathroom and laundry room in 2010. Pretty much everything was updated or replaced over the years except for the wood ceilings in the entry/living room and two original bedrooms.  We never did get around to building a new garage or shop (it was next on the list of projects we were saving up for) and that has been the main factor in why our home hasn't sold yet and why we've needed to continue dropping the price... We have another showing this afternoon so I guess we'll see what happens! 🙏🏻

Home Sweet Home

While I'm sharing pictures of our home, and what it looked like when we first purchased it back in May of 2000, here are some that we had taken for the real estate listing. I shared these on my personal Facebook page when it first went on the market, but want to record them here on the blog too. We listed our home at the worst possible time of year - in August in the middle of fire season when our house was buried in smoke (this was the worst fire season we've ever had) - and everything has been so horribly dry and brown outside. Our photographer did the best he could to clear it up and add some blue back to the skies. Landscaping has never been something I am any good at and all our efforts went towards adding on and remodeling the house. A new garage and landscaping were next on the to-do list had we stayed in Oregon. As things continue to get greener we will probably have some new pictures taken, unless the house sells in the meantime. St. Joseph, pray for us!

This has been such a great home for our family for the past 18 1/2 years.
If you are interested you can scroll through some of the Home Improvement posts I've shared over the years in the archives.  Here are a few to get you started:

The Big Girls' Bedroom {and How We Organize Their American Girl Dolls and Clothes}

After I posted pictures of the girls' paintings yesterday I realized I should have taken a picture of them hanging on the wall!  I still need to purchase a couple white frames, but we temporarily used some tack adhesive to hang them in their bedroom. I also realized that I never did share pictures of their bedroom last summer, after we assembled their new bunk bed and they switched rooms with their younger sister.  Since we spent last week deep cleaning and reorganizing their bedroom, now is the perfect time to take some pictures to share!

This bedroom is still the original "Buttercream" color that I originally choose from Ellen Kennon Full Spectrum Paints when we added on the bedrooms and bathrooms about 10 years ago. I've had to touch it up here and there over the years, but it still looks so bright and cheery.

"Buttercream is a soft yellow with just enough pink to give it a rosy glow without turning peach. It is a mental, intellectual color promoting creativity, logic and organization. Reminiscent of sunshine, it also encourages hope and optimism."

The girls dresser is one that I was given. I had it painted and the knobs replaced by the same lady who painted my dining room hutch.  The "Thank Heaven for Little Girls" sign reminds me of my Grandmother, who would always sing that song to me as a child, and was purchased from a local boutique when the girls were younger.

Caroline (Christmas '12), Felicity (8th birthday/2011), Elizabeth (Christmas '10) and Saige (10th Birthday/2013)

Twinkle Toes keeps her American Girl Dolls on top of the dresser along with her doll cradle.

Kaya (Christmas '12), Josefina (Christmas '10), and Kirsten (7th Birthday/Apr. 2012)

Chiquita keeps her dolls, along with Kaya's Animals and Josefina's bed, on top of the short bookcase in between the foot of their bunk bed and the bedroom door.

When I had to give up our little school room to the younger boys last summer (sniff, sniff . . . I'm still recovering from the loss and struggling to find new homes for everything), I moved two of the newer white bookcases to the big girls' bedroom. The taller bookshelf is filled with quite a few books from my  childhood, as well as some of the girls own favorites.  The bottom shelf has Magazine Files for all of their Lap Books (both completed and in-progress) as well as three-ring binders that contain their individual Holy Card Collections.

We usually hang a crucifix above each bed, but the girls' crucifixes are still hanging above the beds in their old room. Using a couple holes that were already in the wall, I "temporarily" hung a crucifix and our Our Lady of Mount Carmel picture (also from the school room) last summer.

The smaller bookshelf was transformed into their American Girl Clothes Closet and Bookshelf!
We lowered the shelf and placed a tension rod near the top which gave us a perfect place to hang all the pretty dresses and nightgowns for their dolls.

Last year I ordered some tiny wooden hangers at the suggestion of a friend (Thank you, Aimee!) and they are just darling!

I ordered a mix of the standard Doll Clothes Hangers and some Doll Clothes Hangers with Clips.

The girls line up all the dolls coordinating shoes against the back of the bookcase behind the dresses.

The "closet" is still the same - closet organizers along one of their bedroom walls.  Now that they are getting older I wish I would have left a spot for long dresses and skirts when I installed the closet organizers four years ago.

Behind the doors the girls keep a couple boxes with all the rest of the doll accessories, a couple boxes with letters from pen pals, some craft supplies, a couple boxes with all their favorite artwork, and their binders from Little Flowers and Along the Alphabet Path.  Inside the drawers below they keep their hats, craft supplies, and the bottom drawer has their few LEGO sets.

The girls keep their fall and winter clothes on the top bars for now, and have their summer skirts and dresses on the bottom bars. The Green Closetmaid Drawers are where the girls keep their summer shoes (one drawer each), their robes, all of their Calico Critter dolls and furniture, some craft supplies, and I actually think the top drawer is empty at the moment since the dolls that were in it are over in their little sisters room at the moment!

Blessed Imelda(s) and St. Catherine of Siena Zelie Dolls and First Holy Communion Dolls from Saintly Silver

I couldn't resist a close-up picture of some of their dolls on the shelf… You can also see their American Girl Dolls dressed up as saints here

Underneath the bunk bed we have three storage boxes: one for all of their dress-up clothes, one for hand-me-downs that are still too big, and one for their shoes/winter boots.

Despite the little defects (including gray spots/paint overspray on one of the headboards which you can't even notice with it against the wall) I just LOVE the girls' bunk bed!  It is so beautiful and feminine with the lace finish and ROSES!

Anyways, I hope you enjoyed this little tour of their bedroom. Now I have proof that it was actually clean for a couple days! Time to move on and see if we can tackle another room or two in this house before our school year begins. . .

My Daybook :: April 2, 2014

Outside my window...
the sun is shining and the grass is looking pretty green on my side of the fence!  (Not that we actually have a fence yet... It's still on the to-do list... lol) After seriously thinking we would be selling our home and moving, I have been looking around and noticing all the little things I love about our home.  We still have many unfinished projects but it has sure come a long way since we purchased our little fixer-upper 14 years ago this spring.  I'm happy that we will be staying here after all, at least for now.

I am thinking...
that I need to email our oldest son's specialist at the children's hospital. He was sick again on Sunday morning, though it wasn't nearly as severe as usual (perhaps due to his medications, including the acid reducers) and only lasted a couple hours instead of six. It is so strange that it hits like clockwork every two months.  I did talk to the doctor last week and so far there is nothing to worry about from the test results.  She'd like to do an endoscopy next (which requires sedation) but Sean and I would like to look into more allergy testing first.

I am thankful...
that even if I have fallen behind almost everywhere (house cleaning, grocery shopping, bookkeeping, blogging, emails, and even this year's Jesus Tree readings - God had his own Lenten plans for us this year) our school year is going really well and all FIVE of the children are right on track to complete their SAXON Math books before the school year ends! It was a difficult transition back to Saxon from Teaching Textbooks but, according to the learning curves following their recent required state tests, it has been an incredibly productive year too!  I am so proud of all their hard work.

Learning all the time...
This week we are wrapping up our third quarter of this school year and then moving into the final stretch before summer!

Celebrating the liturgical year...
It's time to update the book basket with saint books for April.  I'll try and compile our list soon to share with you all!

From the kitchen...
Cara Cara Oranges. Our little "princess" loves them... After all, they are pink!

I am working on...
our tax return. I still have way too many receipts to sort through from last year, and only two weeks left! Yikes... How is it possibly April already?!

I am creating...
my submissions for RTJ's Creative Catechist. I just submitted my first article for the September issue yesterday!

I am going...
to post another sponsor update at the beginning of May, but do welcome my new April sponsors, Saints 365 and Bridgie & Green, by visiting their blog and Etsy shop!  Be sure to keep all my awesome sponsors in mind, especially with Easter coming up, and be sure to tell them I sent you. If you happen to have a business and are interested in advertising you can download my media kit here or send me an email.

I am hoping...
to spend a little time this afternoon helping the children complete the Holy Week Banner they started making during the homeschool group activity on Monday.

I am praying...
The Holy Way of the Cross to be made by the Christian Mother for the Benefit of her Children found in The Christian Mother: The Education of Her Children and Her Prayer.

I am reading...
The 10 Habits of Happy Mothers: Reclaiming Our Passion, Purpose, and Sanity again, along with Holiness for Housewives (and other working women) and Meditations for Lent.

Pondering these words...
from The 10 Habits of Happy Mothers on Why Mothers Need Solitude:

"Why do we need solitude (and silence, which often accompanies it)? We need it because solitude makes us more sensitive mothers. Removing ourselves from constant stimulation and noise actually sharpens our sensitivity. Also, solitude forces us to face ourselves. In solitude we learn to like ourselves better because we are faced with our own company. It helps us heal from old hurts so that we can be free to enjoy the present and it refreshes us in ways that the company of others can't. Finally, solitude centers us and brings about a deep peace that cannot be achieved while staying immersed in either the good noise of friends and family or the awful noise of raucous media. We must retreat into quiet aloneness so that we can learn to be the women we were meant to be."

I am listening...
to lots of conversations about "selling and buying homes," "new jobs," and "high property taxes." We had a rainy spring break and the children spent lots of time building a lego town in the older boys' bedroom.  I am always amazed at their creativity and need to take some close-up pictures to share.

Around the house...
stacks of books that I need to sell.  I'm trying to decide if I should wait until August to host this year's Curriculum Sale Blog Hop (like usual), host it early (perhaps in May), possibly host two, or just forget the idea and list the books on Cathswap or Ebay... Any thoughts? Are any of you interested in participating in another link-up this year?

One of my favorite things...
visiting the ocean.

This week's plans...
  • Monday: Stations of the Cross and Craft with other local homeschoolers
  • Monday: Dinner Date with my husband
  • Tuesday & Thursday: Tutors for a few hours in the afternoon
  • Meet with our Contractor about a couple projects we are hoping to begin this summer
  • Order a few more books and other little gifts for the children's Easter Baskets (you can find last year's list here
  • Make time for some solitude and another visit to the adoration chapel

A little peek at my husband's birthday...
It's a good thing my husband loves to fight wildfires. . . He had one on his birthday cake this year!

It melted the frosting and the trees, but with a little help he was able to get the fire contained and extinguished!
